Chinese New Year Goodies

  • Feb 13, 2010
Chinese New Year is a time for feasting ... not just your usual dinners but also munching at all time of the day! Most of these snacks can be found in supermarkets in Asia, especially around Chinese New Year. Here are some of my personal favorites.
Love Letter
I especially like this snack as it's not only light, it's crunchy and yummy. There are slight differences between those found in South East Asia & those in North East Asia. Generally, coconut milk is used in those from South East Asia. Since it's also Valentine's Day on first day of CNY, Love Letters is a must!
Mandarin Orange
The fruit of Chinese New Year. A little sweeter and easier to peel than normal orange. Most families stock them up in boxes or cartons. The best are those from Taiwan but generally they are from China. In Singapore, when visiting, it is customary to give 2 mandarin orange to the host.
Roasted Watermelon Seeds
A great snack. Not only it's not as fattening as the rest of the goodies, it's addictive and fun to munch on!
Spekkoek (Kueh Lapis)
This one is commonly found in S. E. Asia. It used to be home made but very time consuming. Now, one can get it from cake shops or pastry shops. The best ones are the one with dates in them. I love Spekkoek!
Pineapple Tarts
One needs to shop around to find the best. The best ones are normally home made. Can be very sweet but the pineapple fillings are great!
Nian Gao 年糕 (Chinese New Year's Cake)
A must for Chinese New Year. It is eaten for good luck and generally a great way to fill the stomach! Best when fried with eggs. There are quite a variety of Nian Gao in China. The ones out of China is usually sweet and brown in color. Turnip cake is not considered Nian Gao although it can be used as a substitute for some. Just as great!
One of the most 'exotic' and a favorite for Chinese New Year. I'm not quite sure why but it's fashionable to have Pistachio during Chinese New Year. Same for groundnuts.
I love the one that's honey roasted. What about you?
Barbecued Pork
Some love this, especially my cousins in Canada. It's too rich for me. In Singapore, it's a must during CNY. There will be long queues outside the numerous stores in Singapore a week or two before CNY. Simply for BBQ Pork! Business has been so good that you can find Bee Cheng Hiang BBQ Pork even in China!
Sweet and a favorite for kids. Some of the chocolates are wrapped in gold foil and shaped like Chinese taels or coins. For good luck, obviously.
Peanut Cookies
A great snack to keep. Highly popularly with both adults and children!

No, I googled for it and see what you mean. It's like new year cake and fried with eggs too! When is the Filipino new year, btw?

same as everywhere else. The Chinese in the Philippines do have CNY though. TIKOY is so good!
