The Rice Table

  • Feb 13, 2010
Some of my favorite Indonesian dishes are featured here. Why the Rice Table? Well, the Rice Table is known as rijsttafel in the Netherlands but Nasi Padang in Indonesia (where it's originally from). It is a whole table of small dishes (about 30 or more) for diners to savor. One only pays for what one eats. Some of the dishes featured on this list are in the Rice Table while some are not (Sate Padang, Rujak & Laksa). Enjoy...
1
Nasi Padang
It's The Rice Table essentially. Kinda like buffet but you pay only for dishes you consumed.
See the full review, "Served in the Netherlands, Originally from? Indonesia!".
2
Sate Padang
Side Street food. Very good with a distinctive sauce found nowhere else but only in Indonesia. Lots of different sticks of meats but what make it special is lidah (tongue), usus (intestine) & babat (tripe). Yummm!!!! My most favorites!
See the full review, "Addicted to Ganja".
3
Indonesian Fruit Rujak
Another side street food. Mostly consist of fruits (pineapple, not so ripe papaya, bangkuang (jicama) & cucumber. Raw mango is sliced into thin slices & grounded with peanuts, belacan (shrimp paste), chili, gula melaka (palm sugar) & lime to make the sauce. Oh my, simply writing about it makes me drool! Oh, another fruits known as jambu air (wax apple or love apple) (shaped like a wedding bell and pink in color) is also included. Delish!!!
4
Ayam Kalasan
A type of fried chicken. The chicken is first stewed in spices (coriander, garlic & coconut water) & then deep fried until very crispy. These chicken tastes so much better than KFC because the chicken itself is actually smaller chicken which are not injected with hormones & whatever else.
5
Ayam Goreng
The best Ayam Goreng in Indonesia is fried chicken flavored with Kunyit, ie. turmeric. The chicken will have a yellowish appearance but oh it tastes so delish!!! I could eat days of these! Just awesome.
6
Pecel
Pecel is a type of vegetable salad. It has a combo of long beans, kangkong, cabbage, bean sprouts and some other veges boiled. Then the peanut sauce is poured over it for flavor. Very healthy & tasty. The sauce is on sale at the market. Before eating, simply dilute the packet with water. The sauce is usually spicy. A type of crackers or emping (fried crackers made of belinjo nut (Gnetum gnemon)) is added on top of the sauce. The combination of cruchy crackers and vegetables is amazing!
7
Gado-Gado
Somewhat similar to Pecel but with some different ingredients. Fried tofu & Tempeh is added to Gado Gado. In addition, sliced boiled potato and eggs are also a must. The sauce is a lot more than those of Pecel. Krupuk or Emping may be added.
8
Bakso
Indonesian Bakso are the best! I used to love to take this when I was a child and especially so when I was sick. No idea why but its texture has an elasticity to it which I still find awesome today. Beef at its best! With modernization, these bakso are available in packets from the supermarket. Mostly frozen, one can buy and ship them home and keep in the fridge for snacks! Isn't that great?!
9
Curry Laksa
In Indonesia, the Laksa is more a snack than a meal itself. It is also similar to the Penang Laksa of Malaysia. Fish base soup and sourish to taste. It is usually spicy with lots of onions it it.
See the full review, "Laksa Exotica".
10
Sayur Asem
Or Sayur Asam. Another soup that tasted sourish. Main ingredients are vegetables. Corn cob is a must here. Tamarind makes the soup sourish. Young jackfruit, belinjo nuts, long beans and peanuts make this soup an extra special soup!
11
Sup Buntut
Ox-tail soup, Indonesian style. Rich but tasty! Best with white rice.
12
Soto Ayam
A clear yellow (due to turmeric) spicy chicken soup with some vermicelli in it. Hard boiled eggs and potatoes are basic ingredients with shreds of chicken. Lontong (compressed rice rolls cut into squares) may also be added.
