In the world today of multi-purpose devices, sometimes simple is better. I needed a DVD player since my old DVD/VHS player had died. The price was right on this unit. The extra features are nice, but I have hardly ever had reason to use them. That said, you can put a lot of .avi files on a disk and what them in their native format. This was a gift from my wife for Christmas two years ago. As a DVD player it gives a great picture and also allows me to play region 2 DVD's which comes in handy for my British copies of the 1950's series of "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (American versions have since become available). I bought this product for my mother-in-law so that she would have the opportunity to play home movies that she burns off of her computer without the problems and space waste associated with turning to a standard dvd format. My mother-in-law has a dvr, and many disks she deemed unrecoverable and was ready to throw away were able to play on this dvd player, even when they couldn't play on the dvd writer that wrote them!
