After months of research I recently purchased the Samsung 55 Edge Lit LED TV. I was looking to add a new larger HDTV to my house(currently own a 47inch Vizio) and wanted something that technologically would keep me interested for at least a few years.

When looking at TV's these days there are a number of shiny objects that can distract you. Here is my take on them and how I netted out.

Refresh rate: The latest TV's sport 240 MHZ, my old TV was 60 MHZ, the Samsung 6300 is 120 MHZ. All of the reviews I read said 120 MHZ is better than 60, 240 is the same as 120. Your eyes cannot see better than 120, so no need to pay for more.

Apps: Many TV's these days sport "apps", Whether it is Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Facebook or other. There is a ton of internet content in some models of TV's today. My take is that apps are currently better left outside my TV. I have Tivo, new Apple TV and want to try Google TV and whatever comes out next. Paying $200-300 more for a TV with apps seems like a waste when I can try out the latest in an attached box. The Samsung 6300 comes without apps, the 6400/6500 models do have apps.

Ports: They all have 4+ HDMI and optical audio these days. Component, composite, RGB are cute, but only for the occasional hookup. Your every day stuff should be digital all the way.

3D: This is by far the latest thing. From what I read, this is a software feature for most TV that support 120 MHZ or better. TV makers love it because they add the feature without work. I'm not sold on the technology that requires me to wear glasses. Plus I like having a reason to go see the latest blockbuster at the 3D iMAX theatre.

Display Technology:
These are the 4 categories that TV's fall into these days and how I would summarize them:
LCD Projection: Rear projection, great value, fat, poorest pict quality
Plasma: Great blacks, great in bright rooms, expensive, heavy, power hog
LCD: bad in bright rooms, low cost, power hog
Edge Lit LED: brighter than LCD, thinner than all, low power consumption, contrast getting close to Plasma.

I have had my Samsung TV for three weeks now, overall I'm very happy with the purchase, a couple notes
-Screen is very bright, it can be setup to auto adjust to room lighting which works great at night.
- The TV is 55 inches and weighs less than 60 pounds
- It is only 1.1 inches thick, that is very cool
- The TV throws off no heat, my old 47 inch LCD heated the room pretty well
- The TV comes with a setting called Auto Motion Plus enabled. This supposedly improves fast moving action by adding a intermediate frame into the action. It changes the picture to make it look like you're watching a bad foreign movie or a homemade video. I turn it on for fun to show people, but leave it off. I'd guess most people don't know about it and leave it on.
- The blacks on the TV are really black. I really cant imagine them being any blacker. When the TV is off the set looks like a black hole.
- I have a Samsung Blu-ray player hooked up via HDMI, the TV and player work together by the Samsung Anynet functionality. When I turn on the blu-ray, the TV auto switches the input, this is pretty cool and would lead me to buy all of one manufacturer in the future.

Buying Process
- I originally fell in love with the 6400 TV on my weekly trip to costco. That TV is the 6300 with apps, it cost $2100 + tax at Costco
- The 6500 is the same as Costco's 6400 at Amazon, better price at Amazon by $400+tax savings with the show me in the basket price.
- I went with the 6300 for ~$1600 + no sales tax. Since I recently signed up for Amazon prime, I had free (2-3 day) shipping to my house. It was scheduled delivery(2 hour block) into my house, guys delivered and were out in 5 minutes.
- amazon has a deal through 8/31 where if you buy a 4ch or larger TV you get $200 off a Tivo XL+.
- Looking a cable box for $15-20/month with a DVR vs Tivo for $250-200 = $50 + a monthly fee of <$10/month since I already have tivo service and receive the multi-room discount made the deal all the much sweeter.

Whoa, nice. Congrats on the purchase! The last television I owned was analog (looking to change this in the next few months though), so all these things that you're describing are astounding to me. Thanks for sharing!
