Hotels for the Adventure Lover

  • Dec 7, 2010
Unique? Yes. Totally out there? Maybe. Check out these hotels that embody adventure, a bit of the exotic, and even the slightly weird.
1
The Liberty Hotel
After 120 years of housing Boston's notorious criminals, the Charles Street Jailhouse was deemed unfit for inmates after prisoners revolted due to the poor living conditions. In 2001 (with prisoners now removed) a design team was hired to transform the prison into a historic hotel.

Now, I've never been to jail, and never wanted to, but a night at the Liberty Hotel does have  allure. The Liberty happily incorporates and preserves many original jailhouse features. You can enjoy dinner next to cell gates, metal bars, and wrought iron windows at their CLINK restaurant. And though the thrill of captivity might be exciting, you won't find yourself sleeping on a hard, cold bed at the Liberty. Suites are luxurious and contemporary, offering everything a prison cell does not, including views of the Boston area, wifi, flat panel TVs and plush bathrooms.

2
The Madonna Inn
The Madonna Inn may be a California staple for accommodations, but some of their themed suites are anything by normal. Each room has a unique theme from Western to Merry-Go-Round, but by far the strangest are the all rock-grotto rooms with waterfall showers. See for yourself....

3
The Utter Inn
Talk about adventure! This typical red Swedish boat house stands alone on the water, below it is your hotel room. That's right, this single room is 3 Meters underwater! You are taken by boat to your room and given explicit instructions on what to do next. Once in your room, you are surrounded by panoramic windows, with views of the aquatic habitat - fish and all!

4
Galactic Suite Space Hotel
This hotel is in space. SPACE! Nothing can get more adventurous than that. Check out the full review!

5
Hotel de Glace
Imagine sleeping in an ice castle! At Hotel de Glace the bed, wall, floors, lobby, and bar are carefully sculpted from frozen water. Guests can enjoy a rather chilly night in their own private room and daily activities include dog sledding, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. Check out the full review for the icy details!

6
The Giraffe Manor
How would you like to have dinner with a herd of wild giraffe? If this has always been your dream, now it can come true! Located in Eastern Africa, this exclusive resort features 180 acres of untouched land, complete with friendly giraffes and other wildlife. Located outside of Nairobi, Kenya the this Manor plays home to 1930's suites decked with all the necessary modern comforts.

7
Magic Mountain Hotel
This beautiful volcano-like hotel is located in Chile inside the Natural Reserve of Huilo Huilo. The lodge featured 9 cozy suites and 10 rustic log cabins. Waterfalls decorate the outside and the interior. Built from local wood, The Magic Mountain hotel also features a restaurant with special local dishes and a hot tub craved from a natural tree trunk. Sounds magical!

8
Kumbuk River Resort
Spend a night sleeping in an elephant's belly in this eco-lodge situated on the Yala river, a Sri Lanka wildlife sanctuary. This two story villa sleeps a total of 12 guests, perfect for a quiet group getaway. You can enjoy all that wildlife offers, without damaging the environment. Not to mention a photo in front of these finely crafted elephant is worth the trip alone!

Thanks, Janelle! I just checked out your blog. I love your mission to see 60% of the countries in the world. I want to do that too:) So, how was the Propeller Island City Lodge? Which room did you stay in? Did you see the Gruft - don't think i could stomach a night in a coffin! Hey, feel free to add some of your travel reviews to the Unique Hotels community. I'm sure other Lunchers would totally love to read about your experiences and the great places you've stayed!

My friend and I stayed in the mirror room, it would have been a better experience if we didn't go during the off season since there wasn't any costumer service and we were the only ones in the hotel. The hotel itself is decorated in crazy ways with great colours everywhere. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the other rooms. I don't think I could have slept in a coffin either. I would have loved to stay in the prison room with the little hole that leads to the balcony.

That's too bad. It's always a bit freaky to be the only people staying in a hotel. I had that experience in a hostel in Spain once. Super creepy! Still, it sounds like an adventurous experience. I'd love to see some of your reviews in the Unique Hotels community, you can link them to your blog too for exposure! Let me know if your interested or need any help!

December 07, 2010
These are awesome! Talk about adventurous! I can definitely see myself at any of these destinations, especially the first one just because it's a half hour drive from me (not because I want to be in prison)! ;)
December 07, 2010
Thanks! I think the Liberty Hotel actually looks really cool! Could be a fun anniversary splurge;) It's definitely as close to a prison as I'd ever want to be!

You are quickly becoming my fave go-to gal for travel! Wow, what a list! I'd love to do all of these, my fiance, maybe not so much- he's a little anti-cold and gets seasick LOL. Thanks for filling me in on these, I probably would've had no idea they existed. I shared it on my FB page for other travel happy buds ;p
December 07, 2010
Aw, thanks, Sam! It's pretty crazy some of the hotel ideas that people come up with (and that they are frequented enough to stay in business!), but I'm glad us adventurous types have plenty of options! And thanks for sharing it!
