Couldn't Have Asked For A Better Hotel Deal in New York City

  • Jan 1, 2011
Especially during new years!

A couple of weeks prior to my trip to the East Coast, I was still undecided about whether I would pass through New York City or not during my stay, so I totally put off looking at hotel rooms until the very last minute.  Once the travel plans were finalized, I was kicking myself for not having decided earlier.

I dreaded Kayak-ing or Googling because I expected even the cheapest of hotels to have sky high prices seeing that I was passing through during the holiday season, especially so close to new years.  I ended up being totally right to dread, though, because hotel prices were indeed insane.

After more internet searching on all of the various popular travel sites out there, I ended up completely lucking out when I stumbled upon the Herald Square Hotel for, get this, $109 a night, so about $130'ish total with tax and everything.  $109 a night hotel in the heart of NYC during new years?  Unheard of.  $109 in general is amazing for anywhere.  I was expecting to fork over much more.

This hotel is located in the Flatiron District by many subway stations, as well as the Penn Station, which was fantastic for me because I arrived by Amtrak and ended up being able to walk to the hotel from the station.  It's pretty hip and happening in the area with plenty of stores, restaurants and people.

Customer Service
We were promptly checked in upon arrival.  The lady that checked us in was really nice.  When we called in with questions, they kindly answered them, and they also extended our checkout time by an hour and a half when we requested it.  Extra bonus points when I found out that this is a family business because I like supporting those!

The room that I got was very tiny and quaint.  My arrival there made me feel like I was really finally in New York City.  The room was pretty much the size of the queen sized bed, plus room for a desk, closet and super mini bathroom.
The room was highly lacking in amenities, but for that price, that's passable.  The four notable things that the room had was a large LG flat screen television with cable, a Sony Dream Machine for playing CDs and to read time, free wifi, and they also had an Aveda soap bar in the bathroom.  Otherwise, it was lacking shampoo, lotions, mints, hair dryer and telephone.  I did highly enjoy this one amenity in the lobby though.  So very cool and nice of them.  Oh, and did I mention there were candies on the table, too? :D

If you're looking for an inexpensive hotel to stay at in NYC and you don't mind a few missing amenities, then I highly recommend the Herald Square Hotel.  Such a great deal!

I'm not too fond of this city. Heard horror stories about its subway too. Glad that you enjoyed your stay here! That's a great rate you got!

Awesome deal! It really is amazing to find a decent hotel at that price during the holidays! And it looks like it was clean and cute too. Frankly, I've never spent much time in my hotel when in NYC anyway, so finding a hotel of good value just allows for more money to spend on food, shows and shopping:) Glad you had fun!

Yup, I don't spend much time in the hotel when I'm traveling, especially in NYC, so I always try to find the most decent hotel room at a reasonable price. I was so expecting it to cost much more than this, but was glad it didn't. Thanks for reading!

Nice one, Lady D...for some reason that coffee machine photo is making me crack up LOL! Happy New Year!

Thanks, Woo! Loved that machine. Unfortunately, I only had time to use it once, but it still amused me nonetheless.
