Medjool dates are a specific type of date from the Date Palm. Trader Joe's sells Medjool dates from Mexico in a 1 lb package. See photo for nutrition facts.
I always liked figs, but haven't had dates in a very long time. I might have eaten some in a distant past. My mother came over for tea and brought these from Trader Joe's instead of Joe Joe's cookies, a much healthier alternative. I instantly fell in love! They are soooooo amazingly sweet, I could only have them with tea. The taste is really unbelievable and the texture is so creamy. I haven't had a much more satisfying sweet snack in a very long time. It is not a sugary candy type sweet, this sweetness has a taste of its own and seems a lot more natural. At first they were a little addictive and I had several pieces. But then I savored the rest of the package at a much slower pace of just one a day for the rest of the week. So sweet, yet without guilt, you are not eating processed sugar here.
As for health benefits, there is a link between the regular consumption of dates and a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. Specifically the Bedouin Arabs eat the fruit regularly and have shown an extremely low rate of cancer and heart disease (although other factors play a role too, they don't ride up to the fast food joint daily on their mule I'm sure). I also have my own family story about the health benefits of this miracle fruit. When my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and had surgery back in Latvia, during her recovery the doctor insisted that she eat these regularly to help the healing process. There weren't any selling in that country and imported dates were brought over from Moscow just for her!
The Medjool variety of dates is a lot larger and more moist than the regular date. So if you've had a regular one before and didn't like it, you should still give these a try. I've never had dates so huge, plump, and juicy! Plus, $3.99 for a pound of Medjool dates is an unbeatable deal. You will not find them cheaper anywhere. There are about 20-25 dates in each package. Try them and you will not regret it!
