If your community is a daily newspaper, this is the attention grabbing headline!

You've started your community. You have a photo, a Tagline, and a Welcome Message. You've written a couple of reviews, you invite everyone you know to contribute. So how do you keep your members engaged and up to date? One of the ways is to use your Founder Message tool.

I'll admit, I've been guilty of not changing my Founder Message very often and not taking advantage of it. There are many ways to use it effectively. Here are some ideas on how to use this short-term message for the benefit of your community and members:

  • Use it to welcome a specific group of people you have invited to your community. For example, if you wrote a blog post on your blog with a link for your readers to join, you can give a shout-out targeted at your loyal fans who are joining the community.
  • Ask people to rate, write a Quick Tip, or a review on a new service or product on the market - be it a stroller, a gadget, or a restaurant.
  • Give some kudos to a specific community member (using @____) that wrote a new review
  • Make an announcement if you are planning to be away and will not have access to moderating your community (just don't give out your address!)
  • Post some words of thanks and encouragement to your contributors
  • Ask your members if there is something they would love to see you review (you can start a topic in the forum for the answers)
  • If an influential person, a celebrity, or some other significant figure has joined your community you can highlight them in the Founder Message.
  • Take advantage of having various means of communicating your purpose and messages to your audience, make sure your Founder Message is not the same as the Welcome Message
  • If you have more ideas please leave a comment or write your own review! :)

Changing your Founder Message frequently provides your members with something to work off of and keeps them in the loop. Posting a new message at least once a week is great and even better if you can change it more often. Check out more tools for keeping your community alive and well!

IF it is a daily newspaper, I won't get any sleep, LOL! I'm already managing 30 communities with possibly more coming! Great suggestion though :-)

Thanks! I can barely manage 1 :)

I'm into things most people are not into so there is probably less to "manage" ;-) If not, hopefully they'll self-run after they've been set up. Otherwise, I'll have to auction them off, LOL...

I type reasonably fast, LOL... if not because of the Great firewall in China, I could have managed more ;-)

  • Thanks to everyone for all your great reviews this past week! Keep up the awesome work!
  • I'm going to be out of town for a few days this week, so I won't be able to respond to feedback.
