Love the Concept!

UPDATE:  After using the site more, I have more to review!  :)

I'm a web developer by trade.  I program, design and create web sites on a daily basis.  8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.  Then moreso as a side job for extra income.  So this review is more on a technical standpoint than anything else.

The Good
The concept is amazing.  Take Yelp + Twitter + FaceBook and add steroids.  Then give it some sunlight, water it on a daily basis and wait for it to bloom.  Then rinse, lather and repeat.

Think of it this way... You log into Yelp to review businesses.  Then you go to Amazon to review things you've purchased.  Then go to Netflix to review the movies you liked.  The idea works.  Someone likes a restaurant that you like.. you get recommendations for other restaurants.

But what happens if that same person likes a product, or a book, or a movie?  Wouldn't it make sense that you MIGHT like it too?  Wouldn't you want to see that recommendation?

That's what Lunch is about.  You can review anything and everything!  This means that cross recommendations can work!

The Bad
I'm trying to write as many reviews as I can, but the user interface can hardly keep up.  It seems as though that the AJAX scripts the site uses is waiting for a response before writing out what needs to be seen.  But instead of a ticking loading screen, or at least a box that shows where the output would go... the whole screen freezes--a tell-tale sign that Javascript is running.

Update:  I think this is related more to slower network connections.  Either way, I think it's something that Lunch should address in the future.

Second point, the screen size.  It looks to me that the shadow'd borders on the left and right of the UI are actually taking up space, instead of acting like a background.  I'm constantly using dual monitors with 1280x1024 resolution on each.  If not, I'm using a single widescreen monitor, 2400 pixels wide.  Yet, the only time the UI doesn't display the horizontal scrollbar is when the window is displayed as a full screen.  Bad design choice IMHO.

Third point, color scheme and typography.  I'm not in love with it.  I feel like there are more than 3 different fonts and the colors do not complement each other.

Bottom Line
I love the concept of Lunch.com.  I'm curious as to the technical aspects of the site--tagging, categorizing and scaling of the infrastructure to compensate for the amount of data that the site could potentially handle.  I know that the UI will follow through someday, but I hope it won't turn into a MySpace-esque type of site (the web in '97).

But hey, if there are any Lunch employees that are reading this review... drop me a line and I'll be glad to help.  Let's even set up an interview!

UPDATE:  I just found out that Lunch revamped it's look a few weeks prior to this review.  That's a very important thing to consider.  Lunch is working it's butt of to get this site perfect!  I'm loving this site!

Now I know why it keeps freezing at my work place. & we are not on slow connection at all. I did suspect it was the javascript. No problem with any other sites, not even streaming... Well, it does take an expert to confirm my suspicions. Thanks! Great review!

Thanks, Sharrie. This is where I'm having the problem, too.. at work. I'm using Portable Firefox, so when I switched back to IE, it helped a bit... but the site doesn't look as "pretty".

I'm using IE but I have a lot of problem with writing reviews! Can't see what I'm typing until I almost finished typing the entire sentence! It's either security issues or javascript as you pointed out.

Thanks @fcarta. I generally see the performance lags on slow connections or slower computers--on both IE and Firefox. Someone from Lunch has already contacted me... which is pretty sweet.

Okay, here's that odd circumstance where I am being offered something for nothing and whining about it.     As you can probably tell from my rating, I generally like Lunch.com. One of the site owners found my work on Epinions.com and asked me to drop in and give Lunch.com a quick whirl, even offering a little bit of payment as an incentive. With Epinions.com swirling ominously around the suckage drain at the moment, I shrugged and said "Well, why not?" And did I mention Lunch.com …

I blogged about Lunch.com on my personal blog (Sharrie.TV) 2 days ago.   Here it is:   As some of you might have know, I was into travelogues many years ago. Spent majority of my waking hours on VirtualTourist. Made some great friends along the way too & got to see many parts of the world which I otherwise wouldn't have step into!      Well, the boss JR Johnson sold it off (I believe he did unless I got my facts wrong!) and is beginning to …

Well, they got me.  I can't remember exactly when I came to Lunch.com.  It was in late December, and when I first got here, I must admit, I was not nearly as impressed.  But they were gracious enough to send me an invite and so I accepted.  Because I was curious.  The site was, for the most part nice, and they just kept improving.  Are there any immediate problems I have with the site now?  Well, not that haven't already been addressed …

Dear nonexistent people who who keep popping up at random: If you're only posting a phony profile of a person who doesn't actually exist, don't follow my work! You're a waste of space and having your name on my followers list is a discredit to me. If you're not an active poster and/or have never been an active poster and/or have no intention of ever being an active poster, you have no business placing me - or really ANYONE AT ALL - on your follow list!

Well, I'm not going to lie to you. Other than logging out for 15 minute coffee breaks at work or signing off for the end of the day, lunch is what I look forward to. Considering the work I do, lunch can never be heavy nor can I indulge myself in something too sweet. Perhaps a snack that's low in carbs, salts, & sugars will suffice while I catch up on emails or what not. Lunch is a very peaceful time of day where you kick back & relax while …

What's this—another social networking site??  Well, not exactly.  Unlike the other popular leading sites, MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, Lunch.com  uses your personal likes and dislikes to scientifically connect you with other members; it keeps a tab on what kind of things you like and makes no assumption that you are already seeking a connection with long lost friends, family, or coworkers. "It's not who you know, but what you know" on Lunch.com.      …

Please consider that this is a fictionalized account of how Lunch.com came to be. Once upon a time, there was an empty space in the information super-highway… Two exciting creative women met in the world of flashing lights.. One was called Healthy Rache. Another was called LingEatsCake. Healthy Rache insists that this empty spot in the cyberspace be made into her own image that it be made "Healthy" and full of energy and life. LingEatsCake insists that it be filled by all the sweetness of life--love …

I was invited and joined Lunch.com a few days ago.If you are into social networks this is a new twist to the original thing. But that is my first "but": I am on a few social networks and somehow never really got friends with them - facebook, twitter, perhaps I just do not know enough people at the beginning or perhaps as a German I am somehow on the wrong continent, or perhaps I am not - any longer! :-) or :-( - spending so much time in front of a computer, but somehow I feel quickly bored or somehow …
