Coachella 2010: Blown Away By...

  • Apr 22, 2010
Coachella 2010 was an absolutely EPIC 3 (well... 4) day weekend of fun, sun, sleep deprivation, friends, and incredible music all sprinkled with some special sauce. All in all, they were ALL very very good. To say putting this list together was difficult, would be a definite understatement (I LOVED Hot Chip at #13) :)
1
Jay-Z
Jay-Z, as a commenter on my Google Buzz pointed out so elegantly, was "nuts up front." I'm still trying to dissect exactly what that means but I do know that Jay-Z brought the thunder in his performance at Coachella. The crowd was feeling it and Jay-Z was feeling the tens of thousands bouncing before him. Beyonce's appearance for "Forever Young" and the Obama clip introducing "Dirt Off Your Shoulders" were just a couple of the many many highlights from his performance. Friday night ended with very high bar set for the rest of the weekend.
2
Wolfgang Gartner
Wolfgang Gartner was our second act, following Aeroplane, to kick-off the first day of Coachella and he blew all of our minds. Having heard little from Wolfgang previous to Coachella he wow'd us in every sense of the word. This guy can mix and other than Guetta, I didn't see this much energy in the Sahara tent all weekend. Highlights included drops of "Wolfgang's 5th Symphony" and "Fire Power" among others - whole set was amazing.
3
Tiësto
Largely considered the #1 DJ in the world Tiesto proved it Saturday night in front of another packed crowd of thousands. It was an amazing performance - I expected him to bring it and that's exactly what he did. And man, doesn't everything sound better with the energy of the crowd, laser lights and enough volume to blow your ear drums out? What?? Say that again? Oh yeah, he rocked!
4
The XX
Prior to Coachella I hadn't heard much of The XX at all but I had heard a couple tracks at the party pad in La Quinta before rolling out to the grounds and knew they were the next "big thing." How lucky we were to enjoy The XX in front of the outdoor stage during sunset in the desert. I'm not going to lie, that plus a small fire atop the main stage, really added to the ambiance and atmosphere but the music stood on its own - "Intro," "Crystalised," and "Teardrops" a few standouts among a solid set from start to end.
5
David Guetta
The guy who brought us "F*ck Me I'm Famous" and numerous chart topping singles in dance music. He's amazing. Lots of lasers, more eardrum deafening volume and a whole lot of energy. The 2nd most happening time in the Sahara tent all weekend.
6
Muse
It's Muse! We only caught the last 3-4 songs after coming from David Guetta (we stayed through his whole set despite intentions to leave 15min earlier for Muse) but it was simply amazing. We took this one a bit low key after an energy filled session for Guetta and sat down on the grass a ways back from the main stage to take it all in. "Knights of Cydonia" was the highlight but all of their songs are something special and a true joy. Great live.
7
LCD Soundsystem
Was he drunk on stage? Sure seemed that way but worked perfectly for a terrific performance of "Losing my Edge."
8
Thom Yorke
What do you get when you combine Thom Yorke of Radiohead and Flea of RHCP? This amazing set on the outdoor stage at Coachella. Highlights included renditions of "Black Swan" and "The Eraser."
9
Phoenix (band)
Left Miike Snow pretty early for this one and it was well worth it! "1901" got the whole crowd riled and into the performance but again a great set from beginning to end. It was packed!
10
Club 75
This DJ supergroup includes Justice, Cassius and DJ Mehdi. I had no idea who Club 75 was prior to witnessing them on Sunday at the Sahara tent until I recognized something familiar (Justice). They got everyone bouncing on their feet, it was so packed we took it all in just outside the front side entrance of the tent and enjoyed the beats with the hundreds of others all enjoying just outside the tent.
11
Aeroplane
Our very first act of the Coachella weekend, it got us rocking and feeling the beats as we waited for Wolfgang Gartner to take over the stage. Was really impressed with the set overall and will keep an eye on these guys for local appearances in LA. I'd definitely suggest checking them out.
12
Gorillaz
Last act of Coachella to close it all out Sunday night! They performed in-real-life on the main stage despite usually playing as a "virtual band" - the music was pretty good and every song had great visuals on the big screens to go along with it. Wasn't totally stoked on the Gorillaz live, I didn't feel like they brought the energy that some of the other acts did for Coachella (bringing something special to the performance) but their music is great and we of course enjoyed it thoroughly still :)
13
Hot Chip (band)
"Over and Over" and "Ready for the Floor" rocked the crowd and got peeps singing along. Great band, stoked to have seen them live.
14
Miike Snow
We only caught the first 20-25 minutes or so before heading over to Phoenix but I absolutely love Miike Snow and wish we could have heard more (if it didn't overlap with Phoenix).
15
Grizzly Bear (band)
Another one I had never heard... Grizzly Bear was a bit low key compared to all of the other acts witnessed over the 3 days but these guys are talented! We sat towards the back of the tent to rest up after a couple solid sets in the Sahara tent (Aeroplane, Wolfgang Gartner) so it wasn't the best way to take them in but we were still very impressed.

What did you think of this list?

Between your list and @ariajuliet's Coachella review, ditto @PattyP -- I am so jealous!  Of the musicians that I've heard of on this list (which is most of them), I dig them all immensely!  Gotta make it does one of these years.  Thanks for sharing, Mike! :)
