Luncher Profile Vol. 4: A Tribute To A Great Friend, and Fellow Reviewer Who Loves Horror Films!

Let's use AC-DC'S Song as background shall we?

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DixnDjsEta0

My friend Brian (@Cenobite) had already roasted this reviewer in the past. So I guess it would be redundant for me to try and roast an already roasted fella right? Well, as everyone knows by now, Christy is male (I think) so we shall name him as Chris today. So why the heck am I writing a review on this reviewer? Well, he has become my friend since I met him about 3-4 years ago in amazon.com when he kindly commented in my “30 days Of Night” review. We both discovered that we were horror, art house cinema fans and after that we began sharing things about cult cinema.

Chris a terrific guy, the first time I talked to him, and the first thing he said was that I had real good taste in film and then I thanked him for the cult films that he has recommended to me. I learned a lot from Chris; I actually see him as one of my “go to” guys when came to movies. I have to say I would never have developed as “woopak” without Chris’ criticisms and support. During my early days of reviewing, Chris, Nick, Frank and Jenny (there are two others but they’re not in this site) kept me honest and focused in reviewing while others like Alex kept me motivated. Yes, I know some of you don’t like my reviews, but for those who do, they are among my greatest influences in reviewing. Our friend calls him "Mr. Criterion" to reflect his love for Foreign films.

Christy

              Chris and his wife...

Some may see that Chris has an odd taste in movies but that is what makes him different. Producers of such movies have sent him complimentary autographed copies of their movies after he reviews them and one thing most people don’t know about him is the fact that he is a published writer. His work in a comic book poetry is pretty good. It is somewhat dark on some sections (But remember I am really dumb when it comes to poetry) but most of poetry and poems are sincere.

Going back to his taste in movies, Chris likes movies mostly in the horror genre. I heard he wasn’t allowed to see them as a kid (while I saw the Exorcist when I was 8 or 9 years old) so you can understand his passion for horror movies. Actually Chris specializes in cult horror movies; the ones that are different and so hardcore that most audiences would turn away. Some can say that his movie tastes can easily be misunderstood. Chris likes movies that can be defined as soul-scorchers, different and horror that is unnerving and disturbing. True horror films are meant to be disturbing; Hollywood gave the horror genre a bad name by relying on special effects. But this tribute isn’t about the horror genre, but rather a thank you to Chris who has educated me with a different world of cinema. Some may see his tastes in movies as trash, but hey, it all depends on what you look for. I am a cinema fan, and films are an art form; it also reflects a society and a country’s culture. But Chris isn’t all about horror; among his favorite genres are SILENT FILMS, Art Films, and fantasy. He’s a well-rounded movie fan, but he does favor horror and cult films.

Cannibal Holocaust  Pandora's Box

                        Another Bergman masterpiece

As a Luncher, Chris was supportive of his friends and I do believe he has more badges than even myself because of his activity. He had made contributions in REEL OVERSEAS, Rebellious Rabble Radio, my two movie communities on Mainstream movies and Asian Cinema, REALITY INKED (he dug into his old comic books just so he can contribute) and many others. I do admit some of his content can be edgy at times but it is all for ‘tongue and cheek’ for him. He’s a comedian, and likes to joke around with his friends. I’ve never seen him disrespect anyone the way someone else plays the troll numerous times (you know who you are).

I suppose the main reason why I wanted to do this tribute to Chris is because he is often misunderstood, and I would like to express my gratitude to him with a small gesture. When things go awry, Chris always looked out for the benefit of his friends; he never tried to sabotage me as someone did in one of my communities and played games with his votes (you also know who you are), sent me different types of movies through the mail and has given a number of community founders a lot of support. He was the first one to say to me “not to do anything stupid”. Chris may have a weird taste in films (even his wife knows this ha-hah) but he is above all a kind, respectful person and you’ll have to get to know him to really like him and see the great, (ahem) gentle man inside.

Thanks for everything, Chris…er…Christy!

Sorry your friends are gone, William!
June 22, 2010
I am sorry too. I guess this isn't the site for real cinema now I won't be as active as a result. . But not to worry, we will reconvene.

June 10, 2010
I'm just sick over this. I refuse to give up on trying to make it her, but without guys like Christy (and now Trashie) how can we ever hope to make it work?
June 11, 2010
I know how you feel, Karen. I feel less motivated to write reviews now. It just doesn't feel the same without them.
June 11, 2010
Yeah, I know what you both are saying too...
June 11, 2010
(sound of muffled sobs.)
June 11, 2010
I hear yah, Karen...

June 08, 2010
Applause, applause. Can't help but wonder IF "our" (I say this tho have NOT written anything, just a reader at this point - my bad) merry band of horror-minded reviewers can still have a location here on LUNCH with some sort of, oh, "beware of bad words" type of heading? Would truly hate to see the wonderful work that has been done here - and the great films I've had the pleasure of watching (well, most of them were pleasurable!) - from Christy, Pak, Trash, et al's comments and reviews be lost on those who have just found this site or will find it. Maybe something can still be resolved? Blessed Be & Harm None (well, other than in film...), connie
June 09, 2010
Thank you very much for the read, Connie! I know Lunch has the right to steer their site towards whatever direction they see fit, and we were just happy to be in a little corner so we can share stuff that most people don't know anything about. Christy's is already gone today and I will miss him terribly.
June 09, 2010
I'm confused ... I got a post / review from him just today -- was that maybe b4 he was "officially" beheaded? Do we know yet where he'll be going to do his reviews ... or will he be working on his other art forms? Now that I finally have time to DO something on here (college had me running in circles after I joined here), it seems that two of the main people I wish to read have left - one by TPTB and one via virtual suicide. :-( Please, if you would, can you keep me updated? I know TCM will, when he gets settled. PEACE... connie
June 09, 2010
Hi, Connie, I do believe that he was officially deleted in the afternoon. Right now, I think the crew is going to be taking a break. I will definitely keep you posted. :)
June 11, 2010
Btw, thanks for joining my Asian and Anime community... :)
June 11, 2010
Thank you and Trashie for introducing me to some ... interesting ... films! Just watched DEAD SPACE: DOWNFALL, which Trashie had mentioned in a review - and think all of you had discussed (yeah, I've been reading most everything for four months, just not contributing, sorry). Got hooked on Anime - gads - 20 some years ago when AKIRA came out. They have (had?) a 24-hour SCI-FI movie marathon every year at Coolidge Corner Theatre - last one I went to was the 20th year anniversary one, and that was, indeed, at least 15 yrs ago. anyway...they premiered AKIRA there for U.S. audiences - and the crowd went WILD! I finally bought it this year, with the few extras it has, in the lovely metal case - quite kewl to have in the collection. During one of the marathons, Stuart Gordon (FORTRESS, RE-AMINATOR, among other gross-out films) had a Q & A session with the audience. Good times, saw many a 1940- 1950 "serial" during those (went to about ten of them, people sleeping in the aisles, or in back of theatre - killed the back, of course...grin). ANYWAY... it is a pleasure to be here, and thank YOU for your warm welcome PEACE...Conn
June 11, 2010
Don't overlook FROM BEYOND when you talk about Stuart Gordon.
June 11, 2010
How prophetic you should mention that ... it's next on my NETFLIX watch at home list! KEWL...didn't remember it was one of his - double fun, double gore!
June 12, 2010
Connie, comments like yours are the ones that keep me motivated in finding the most obscure worthwhile pieces of entertainment. Feel free to message me anytime.

June 08, 2010
Great tribute piece, William. I am really saddened by all the drama and censorship that occurred when I was gone this past weekend. I'm still fuzzy on a lot of the details...
June 09, 2010
Thank you for the read, Adrianna, I know some people didn't like his reviews but then again, what reviews are liked by everyone? The site made a decision, and I really cannot say anything further.
June 09, 2010
No problem, William. I'm just reading the comments/messages about everything that happened while I was away. I don't understand why he was targeted, but like you said, a decision was made...
June 09, 2010
All I can say is that anyone who reviews a lot of movies is guilty of reviewing the occasional graphic content (including myself) most especially those who review foreign cinema. We stated our case and petitioned for his reinstatement, to no avail. I understand, but I don't have to agree with it. Question is: what happens if this person for whatever motivation decides to pick on me, Frank and anyone else? Something I may need to think about...
June 10, 2010
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm a bit nervous now myself. Targeting users simply because you don't like them is not professional of the Lunch employees.
June 11, 2010
According to Lunch, they lost members because of Chris' content, which is why they had to delete his account. Let's say this is  indeed true...Question is, all these people who flagged his reviews, would they even had reviewed anything anyway or would've they have been supportive? Serious reviewers are always tolerant of others and know when to read and not to read. You know I get naughty myself sometimes, so what is stopping them from singling me out next time?  So now, two of my friends and foremost supporters are gone and their votes along with them....I see everyone is affected. That top 10 ranking means nothing to me now since two of the most prolific writers are gone. Iwas just happy to have a little corner where I can talk to you guys....

Well, as some other member  told me, if I am unhappy maybe I should start my own website...quite insensitive to say after Chris and Trash had also supported him.
June 11, 2010
William, businesses and online web reviews sites are tricky places. I had my own personal vendetta from Goodreads for a while, but it was nothing compared to this. I agree with you that serious reviewers are always tolerant, so I wonder how many complaints they received and/or how many people left. It's the type of situation where you have to "trust the powers that be," and it sounds like a lot of the top users don't. It doesn't help that we are all getting mixed messages and that so much stuff was done behind doors.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with getting a little bit naughty, especially if a review item demands such attentions. Have they ever targeted you before?

I know what you mean about the top 10 ranking. I've never placed much stock in all the competition that goes on with this site. And now there are these badges...hm....I'm just not sure what to think about it all. And, I'm getting some pretty crappy quick tips in Cafe Libri because of all the badges people can earn from them.

I agree with you about the insensitivity of this user...I can take a couple of guesses who it probably is. :(

I've always been an optimistic person until as of late. Now, I feel rather pessimistic (not all of it has to do with Lunch). I'm in the same mindset of Karen-- trying to create change and make it better by sticking with the site. But, things won't ever be the same without Christy or Nick. That's a reality that we have to face no matter how painful as well as the implications of this entire situation.

Is Christy still reviewing elsewhere? I know Nick said he was giving up reviews for a while...I just hope he comes back to the writing. That's the biggest shame....to lose your voice and to be denied a voice... :(
June 11, 2010
I know Nick asked them for a number with no names but he never got an answer. He told me that if they gave him a figure then he would never have left. I was targetted for one of my reviews "Sachiko Hanai" when the site was young. They didn't delete the review because I wasn't the only one who reviewed it and I only wanted to present a different opinion. My concern is, what happens if someone just gets their friends together and start flagging me? I saw it happen in amazon more then once.

I am not too big on badges or rankings so I am with you on that one. I had such plans, I even took out an old book to review it for you "Kavalier and Klay" but I am not even sure if I'll get to that now.

I am pretty sure you know who that member is.

Christy is taking a break as with Nick. I am now also on break and I am not sure if I will even review here again. But I don't want to leave (yet) because it will hurt those remaining (your votes disappear when you leave). Maybe they'll find a new site and we'll reconvene. I'll keep you and Aerin posted since I consider you my friends. :) we'll see if I can break that mental block that is hampering my 'reviewing passion' LOL!
June 11, 2010
I can't understand why people give up their own identities so easily without a fight. No troll can frighten me off simply because they don't agree with me.
June 11, 2010
@woopak_the_thrill: I'm surprised they wouldn't offer Nick a number count. That seems to be a fair question, especially with the extreme punishment Christy was faced with.

Take your time with any reviews you were planning. Having a break is not a bad thing. Maybe you will feel better in time...

Yeah, I definitely do now (as to the member).

Thanks for keeping me and Aerin informed as to your future plans. I can't promise that I will follow suit because despite all its flaws, I still enjoy all that Lunch has to offer. I am considering cross-posting reviews here and on epinions, though. It would be nice to just KIT either way. (hugs)

@AerinBlue I also agree! William is a great friend!

@QUEENBFLIX I'm with you. I don't want to give up my reviewer identity here without a fight, and I don't want to be scared away by trolls. I'm a fighter. :)
June 12, 2010

Adrianna, No, they didn't give a number count which is why Trashie packed up and left. I do not expect anyone to follow suit if I do decide to leave. I'd like you guys to be happy here since it is a site with loads of user-friendly features.

Right now, I am really unsure what my future will be at this site though. I know some people would like to see me stay but most would like to see me go I think. I just got a notification that one of the other folks I've invited (another top contributor in my communities) is leaving too. It'll be tough to stay...

June 12, 2010
Whatever you decide, William, do what pleases you first. That is the most important thing to consider in this situation. If you're not happy here, seek out greener pastures, so to speak. If you want to stay and try to change/improve things, then do that. Either way, your true friends will support you. It's a tough decision...

(sends warm hugs your way)
June 12, 2010
Thanks, Adrianna (send hugs back).

@Aerin, oh thanks for that. I am just taking a break for now and let's see what happens in the future. I will message you guys my email address (es). I know Adrianna has a ton of those LOL!
June 12, 2010
Yeah...I know...I'm crazy like that! I just can't seem to rid myself of any of my emails. What I really need to do is set up a complicated forwarding system. Then, that'll really confuse me. ;)

June 08, 2010
Excellent work my friend on another person here that I also call friend, thanks for putting this in my comm. As soon as I am done typing this it will be a featured review in "What Can I Say", sorry I am late getting to this and to everybody else. Some things went down this weekend. Excellent stuff WP, well done indeed.
June 09, 2010
No problem, Alex, Chris is gone now and I sure will miss him.
June 11, 2010
With Chris and Trashie gone those of us who remain must still fight the good fight.
June 11, 2010
I agree, Karen. :)

June 06, 2010
Nicely done and even kind of touching, er maybe that's not the right word, genuinely heartfelt sounds better. LOL! I've only recently become aware that Chris wrote poetry and I hope he'll share more of it with us at some point. I too consider Chris a friend and while I can't claim that we have exactly the same tastes, I don't think he has ever tried to go out of his way to offend people as has been inferred, and I believe that while his contributions to this site may have aroused controversy and been unpopular with some people, that they are still relevant to the interests of the site's members and to fans of the genre. Having said that, I don't think that Chris should be asked to leave the site, plain and simple because by my definition and by many others, he has not violated any of the guidelines when it comes to what content is and isn't acceptable. If there are other reasons for him being asked to leave, they should be made know to him as well as us.
June 06, 2010
Yeah, Karen has wondered why she's not featured more. I can't say this with any certainty, but she once posted a review of a film about a political figure that had a headline with the "F" word in it. So she may not get featured because of that which is ridiculous because the headline was a direct reference to a real quote made by that political figure.
But again, this is just speculation.
June 06, 2010
LOL! I've got two cookie recipes on here if she wants to. Oh, but wait, I call them Count Orlok's cookies in the recipe title and that might make them horror cookies.
June 06, 2010
Nah, they're vegetarian. Only animal product is eggs.
June 07, 2010
Orlok is easy to drive off--give him waffles LOL!
June 07, 2010
I'd throw 'em at you with some maple syrup and strawberries. LOL! I like strawberries, in fact all berries.
June 12, 2010
you're a VERY BERRY.
June 12, 2010
Dare I ask what you mean by that?
June 12, 2010
our brains are made up of berries...which makes us berries. God, I don't know what I am saying LOL! that didn't make sense to me...
June 12, 2010
ok, this is a tribute not a mud-slinging contest...LOL!
June 12, 2010
You've been drinking, haven't you?
June 12, 2010
I can't deny it....I got hella drunk last night....
June 12, 2010
It shows. LOL!
June 12, 2010
(laughs) Yay for drinking! I like Miller Chill! :D
June 12, 2010
I'm not a fan of light beer, but those go great with Mexican food! Oh great, Adri, no you've got me craving beer and tacos. LOL!
June 12, 2010
sake-bombs, unee-shots and oyster shots are my thing!! LOL!
June 13, 2010
No wine, no beer?
June 13, 2010
well I do also like HENNESSEY :)
June 13, 2010
(laughs) Light beers are my faves, but I try some of the local beers a lot, like Tangerine Wheat. What can I say, I'm a bit girlie in this department? And, yeah for Mexican food! I love it! I had some last night...cheese enchiladas! Yum yum!

WIlliam, I had my first sake bomb like two or so weeks ago. It was so much fun! I've never done something like that before...it was paired with Kirin, I  believe. :)

Beware! Lock Up Your Granny & Keeps The Kids At Bay
I had met this Christy character awhile back after getting some feedback on a review I had initially wrote for another website. Naturally, the feedback was tasteful & even made my heart glow so I sent my dear reader a thank you email. We corresponded for a hot minute via email & then the communication would take a brief hiatus. As fate would have it, there would be much to talk about later & plenty more to learn for both parties here.      …

Christy's a cool chick, but she has the dirtiest and most morbid sense of humor, so try not to be offended. Great insight into movies, too!
