This title fight was held Saturday night on May 5, 2012. The contenders weighed in at a trim 154 pounds. Both Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto were in top shape. The early rounds were awarded to Floyd mostly on the shear volume of punches thrown although Miguel threw some powerful punches of his own. The fight cards were in favor of Floyd 9 rounds to 3 for Miguel Cotto. Many fans possibly disagreed on the plurality of rounds awarded Floyd although most fans saw the fight for Floyd. A few diehards saw the fight in favor of Miguel Cotto.
Floyd was in great shape going into the fight and he fought an excellent bout with few errors. Floyd probably fought too much on the ropes; however, he excels in this area. He fended off many major attacks while on the ropes. Miguel took a tremendous beating on the side of the head with over 60 punches having been scored according to the pictured torso of both men after the fight with the number of punches landed having been shown for each major body part. Still, this commentator will have awarded Miguel Cotto 5 of the 12 rounds not just three. Both fighters absorbed some ferocious facial shots which is a testament to their general conditioning as fighters.
Floyd needs to do more running and sparring to prevail against Manny Pacquiao. Miguel Cotto needs to throw more punches and present a better defense to prevail in the future against Floyd. Time is on the side of Miguel Cotto because he is the younger fighter. Over time, Floyd will lose functionality in the ring through age; whereas, Miguel Cotto still has some time left to perfect his skills for another title fight. The hour clock is running for both men but it runs faster for Floyd.
Most commentators expect the Floyd Mayweather v. Manny Pacquiao fight to happen as early as late this year. Floyd should take the fight sooner rather than later for the reasons enunciated above. With time, Floyd only gets older and the fight game gets harder for an older man to prevail. Basically, 25 years of age is the peak. After 25 years old, there is a slow but steady decline and the workouts must be more rigorous to keep up with past achievements or milestones. Manny Pacquiao will be tough to beat because of speed, agility, aggressiveness and the shear volume of punches he throws from virtually every angle. Can Mayweather beat Pacquiao? Time and the quality of the fight preparation will tell for sure. The Pacquiao fight will be harder for Floyd because Manny throws more punches and moves faster.
