Can't See This Fight Happening

Over the last couple of years I have seen Mayweather pull some of the cheapest tactics ever to win fights (worse than Richard Steele calling a knockout with a few seconds left in a championship fight) and has let money get in the way with fighting Pacquiao. I have been watching boxing since Ali came back to fight Jerry Quarry and Pacquiao is probably the fiercest fighter I have every seen.

Someone like Mayweather, who is nearing retiriement with a perfect record, who doesn't need a big pay day has good reason to avoid a fight where he can be knocked silly. He really struggled against Miguel Cotto and I think Pacquiao would give him a really bad beating to send him into retirement. He is a bully who will pull out all the cheap tactics to win. A Joe Frazier he certainly isn't. Frazier would let his fists do the talking and had no fear against anyone (witness how he never gave up while being demolished by George Foreman).

I for one cannot see this fight ever coming off. This is the only fight that could bring back interest in boxing (along with a Klitchko vs. Klitchko fight that would never happen either as both brothers said such a fight would kill their mother). It is a shame as many fans have left boxing for Mixed Martial Arts and other sports. This could have been the thing to put boxing at the lead of the sports pages one last time.

That's the only thing that really irritates me about this. Mayweather isn't thinking about delivering to the fans, it's about leaving undefeated and money to him. It should be about giving something to the fans, which is a good boxing match. But on a side note, I don't think he will make the same mistake against Manny like he did Cotto. So I don't believe he would be heavily dominated.

Again I think he wants to go out undefeated and with all his faculties intact. He risks both with a Pacquiao fight. If he really wanted to silence the critics, he wouldn't let money get in the way.

That's definitely what is. He said more than once he wants to go undefeated and be recognized as the greatest fighter to put on gloves. But I feel he's doing the sport a disservice with these tactics. Just give the fans that super-fight we all want already.

Last Saturday's weird decision is proof promoters have lost all faith in this bout taking place. I don't think it's ever going to happen now, and if it does, so much time would have passed and the men will be so close to being forced into retirement, it more than likely won't even matter anymore.
