Being a baseball kid with my dad, for most of young life, I started "noticing" the sport of football when I was around 13. None of my immediate friends were into it as a sport. In fact, I had unceremoniously surrounded myself with friends who were into baseball and hockey; perhaps a couple of basketball fans, as well. However, my cousin was into football, and he had his team -- the 49'ers. I wanted to jump into the action, so I looked at all the teams that I could choose from and cherry-picked the team I would eventually call "my team."

At this time, the Rams and the Raiders were still in Los Angeles. Yet, I had no emotional tie to them. Although, no, he wasn't my dad (if you were to believe all of those womanizer and infidelitous accusations to his reputation), I was a big fan of Steve Garvey. He was a Dodger once, and signed with the San Deigo Padres as a free agent in '83. Thus, with more of an allegiance to the player than the team (Hey, I was only 6 or 7!), I followed Garvey to the Padres, and became a Padres fan.
So, that's how I became a Chargers fan. They were the other San Diego sports team, and as lowly as they were, they didn't have the instant possibility of success that the Raiders or Dodgers would have. So, I chose the San Diego Chargers as "my team."
There have been a lot of lean years as a Chargers fan. In the early 80's, they were apparently a very exciting team. The "Air Coryell" years -- based on the name of their coach -- was named as cuh because they were the highest scoring offense in the NFL at the time, and scored mainly through their passing game. Dan Fouts was their big name quarterback, at the time, with probably the game's best Tight End (I'm not talking about the position, not his ass) of all time -- Kellen Winslow.
I suffered through the Stan Humphries years (admittedly not too bad, as he even led them to the Chargers first Super Bowl) to the Ryan Leaf years (which most Charger fan would soon rather forget), and have now seen them on the precipice of being an elite team for the first time.
Things are looking rocky with Norv Turner as their head coach, but some things are like a diesease you can't shake. If you root for a team that doesn't have a history of winning, it makes it even more worthwhile to be there when they start reaching success. I could have started off being a Packers fan, or even a Cowboys or 49'ers fan. But, that was too easy. I chose a team that didn't have a history of winning, and have stuck by them ever since. To see them possibly become an elite dynasty sometime soon makes me feel as if I'm reaping the fruits of my fanship.
So that, my friends, is why I'll always be a fan of the San Diego Chargers.

Very happy for yu that your loyalty to the Chargers is finally paying off this season. The Chargers have a very real chance to win it all!
