An unbloody hardcore night in the kinder and gentler WWE.

WWE decided to change the name of this ppv which was originally called One Night Stand. The original concept was for the ECW brand to have their very own ppv. Which was a night of hardcore matches with the rules thrown out. After 2006, it gradually changed into a more oriented WWE event. In 2008, the name was changed altogether into Extreme Rules, with One Night Stand being completely dropped. However, the concept stayed the same and the event is still a night of gimmick matches.

As usual, there was a storyline coming into each of the matches which was a very good thing, because it gave fans a reason to care. Plus, it gives the wrestlers reasons to get hardcore on each other. Unfortunately, WWE delivered a pretty bad event. Extreme Rules wasn't bad to me because it was a hardcore event with a PG rating. It was in light of the terrible booking decisions and some of the matches just weren't good. As a result, this event turned out to be among the worst of 09.

1) Fatal 4 Way for the United States Championship
Kofi Kingston(C) vs. MVP vs. Matt Hardy vs. William Regal

The rules for this match are simple. The first one to score a pinfall or submission becomes the new champion.

Right off the bat, this match lost some of its appeal to me because it wasn't elimination. This had the potential to be a show stealer, and it could have displayed these guys individual talents. But it got a short amount of time only to put over the comedy act later on in the event.

The match was still a good opener despite the botched spots. Most of them got a chance to really shine displaying a few signature moves. Kofi was the standout putting his cat like reflexes to work, and watching him was a sight to see. The ending was very well pulled off. 3.5/5

2) No Holds Barred Match for the Intercontinental Championship
Rey Mysterio(C) vs. Chris Jericho

The rules for this match are no Disqualification or Countouts. It can only be won by pinfall or submission.

Jericho opens up the bout delivering another one of his heel promos. I've said it before but I have to mention again. This was by far Jericho's best heel run ever. He enters the ring making his way through the crowd ripping apart Rey, plus making a couple of guarantees: He promised to unmask Rey, plus become IC champion for the 9th time, thus breaking his own record in the process. It's definitely worth hearing if you're a Jericho fan.

I really liked the psychology in this match. We all knew the rules were thrown out. But they proved they can deliver another solid bout with straight wrestling, by only injecting a small amount of hardcore elements. Rey took it to Jericho very early and outwitted him for most of the bout. There was some very good and smart offense from both ends, to go along with the finishers and counters. The ending was very creative, and these two would go on to continue feuding. Also, this is the best match you will see until the Main Event. 4/5

3) Samoan Strap Match
CM Punk vs. Umaga

This match contains the usual rules for a strap match. Both superstars are tied at the wrist with a ten foot strap, and the first superstar to touch all four corners in succession wins.

The success of their Judgment Day encounter couldn't be repeated. This match was very boring and never became anything special. The race to try and touch the turnbuckles took away from the match a great deal, and most of the action just didn't move me. They got in some of their usual moves, but the only cool part was the ending. 2.5/5

4) Triple Threat Match for the ECW Championship
Christian(C) vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Jack Swagger

The first superstar to score the pinfall or submission will become new champion.

This match has an additional stipulation. If Tommy Dreamer doesn't become champion, then he must leave wrestling for good. This stipulation is not in the ECW Original's favor at all. Since he hasn't won on ppv in a very long time.

The match had its fun moments and it felt ECW-ish somewhat. They brought in quite a few weapons consisting of kendo sticks and trashcans. They beat each other up pretty well. But the crowd wasn't too into it and neither was I. There was only one really decent spot. But outside of the ending, there really wasn't much I would consider to be memorable. 3.25/5

5) Hog Pen Match
Santina Marella vs. Vickie Guerrero

This match takes place inside of a pig pen, filled with mud and slop. This is a one fall match.

I hated the very thought that this match was even on ppv. Nobody wants to see stuff like this they have to pay for. This "match" took up way too much time and other matches were shortchanged bad. It actually had a couple of funny moments and I kept wondering how did Santino's wig stay on. Everybody was soaked and covered in mud by the end, plus Vickie got slopped bad. This is wrestlecrap at its best. 0/5

6) Steelcage Match for the WWE Championship
Randy Orton(C) vs. Batista

The first superstar to score a pinfall, submission, or escape the cage: either by going through the door, or climbing out will become the new champion.

I have mixed feelings on this match. Mostly towards the negative sad to say. Once again, Randy plays the very cowardly heel who tries desperately to escape only to be stopped and pounded by Batista. The match was short, but it delivered a good amount of action in that short time which was about 7 minutes.

Randy took some serious punishment here, such as being speared into the cage, and thrown around a bit. But I didn't get the logic on putting the belt on Batista though, when looking at the fact that he was injured coming in. If I'm not mistaken, he dropped the belt the very next night, and he left a few months again due to his injury. As a result, the belt was put right back on Orton, which made no sense taking it off of him in the first place. 2.75/5

7) Submission Match
John Cena vs. Big Show

This match can only end by submission.

This is the best match I seen between these two and I still don't like it. They told a pretty good story here, with Cena not being able to lock on the STF and most of this offense being useless. But, I hated the character portrayal in this match. Once again, Cena is made out into being Superman. Look, John Cena is not stronger than the Big Show. End of Story. If a 7 foot 2 near 500lb. man with hands that size locks a submission on anyone, it's a done deal. This feud was pathetic. 2.25/5

8) Ladder Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Edge(C) vs. Jeff Hardy

The title is suspended above the ring. The first superstar to climb the ladder and retrieve the belt will be the champion.

A very solid main event but it didn't live up to its full potential, and I had such very high hopes for this one. This match was the reason I wanted to see the event, and there was some spice added to it after Vickie Guerrero told Edge he was on his own. So this bout was guaranteed to stay one on one. But thanks to that wrestlecrap time killer, this match didn't get the time it needed to be truly special.

Still, they delivered what they could. There were a lot of ladders outside the ring, and these two were trying to be as innovative as possible. The match was brutal and just plain crazy at times. They fought on one of the ladders, and took a serious fall on top of another one. There were a few nice spots, with the ending being the ultimate slap in the face. The closing minutes were the best I have ever seen in a Ladder Match, and when looking at it from the point of view concerning the loser. The ending worked out to perfection.

The only thing I didn't care for was the after match segment. I really didn't care at all for how the event ended. But, it did make a lot of sense concerning the situation behind the scenes. 4.25/5

Overall, I think this event is pretty much skip material if you're not a die hard wrestling fan. This ppv isn't exactly forgettable, but it's not worth a purchase either. A rental would be just fine.

Pros:
-Main event, Rey vs. Jericho

Cons:
-Almost everything else

I miss the old original ECW...what do you think about TNA?

I think TNA has been bullshit for a very long time. Pushing stars who had their runs nearly 20 to 30 years ago.

About this movie

Wiki

Extreme Rules (2009) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which took place on June 7, 2009 at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. This was the fifth show in the lineage of the One Night Stand event, but the first to be referred to as Extreme Rules.[3] It featured talent from the Raw, SmackDown, and ECW brands. There were eight matches scheduled on the event's card, though nine actually took place.[4]

The main event was a Ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship, which saw Jeff Hardy defeat the reigning champion Edge to win the title. After the match, CM Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, which guaranteed him a title match at the time and place of his choosing, and defeated Hardy for his newly-won title. There were also two other highly-publicized matches; the first was a steel cage match for the WWE Championship between the champion Randy Orton and Batista, as well as a submission match between The Big Show and John Cena. Featured matches on the undercard included a No Holds Barred match between Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho for the WWE Intercontinental Championship, CM Punk versus Umaga in a Samoan Strap match and a Triple Threat Hardcore match for the ECW Championship.

The event had 213,000 buys, up from the One Night Stand 2008 figure of 194,000 buys.[
