Cons: Weapons are next to useless, very little replay value, some area are annoying as hell.
The Bottom Line: It's a must rent for a weekend, but it's too short and has too little replay value for me to give it top honor.
You'd think after getting their butts whupped time and time again by game players like us, terrorists would just give up. But no. They just keep coming back and back with more schemes that are getting more and more complex, only so they can get whupped yet again.
The newest terrorist group is doing something complicated with nuclear weapons. They have the most powerful weapon ever built and are willing to use it. It is an oversized tank called Metal Gear, and it can carry nukes. Our terrorists want to start a war with it. Of course it's up to our hero, Solid Snake, to penetrate the terrorist homebase and destroy Metal Gear and all the bad guys that helped build it.
The key word in this game, like in Goldeneye, is STEALTH. You have to sneak in and kill the bad guys without them even knowing. But, unlike Goldeneye, you don't start with any weapons, and the terrorists will call in reinforcements at the mere sound of you creeping around. So you go about your business trying to avoid fights.
It may not sound like much, but this style actually works well. It's fun to sneak up behind a bad guy and break his neck without him noticing. And early in the game, you can find a gun, and later, you get to find better weapons like sniper rifles and rocket launchers. So you don't have to worry too much if you are caught, because in most cases you can just pick off your assailant and move on. Unfortunately, the weapon selection is a flaw. Think about it: because you spend most of the game in hiding, you can't use the big, fun weapons because they make noise. Every weapon, with the exception of the handgun, is situation suited, which means that if you use them in any other part of the game except where they're supposed to be used, someone will hear it and call in the cavalry, which WILL kill you. So the only weapons that serve any real purpose are your throw and chokehold.
No complaints in the graphics and sounds department. The graphics are the same polygon style used in just about every other Playstation game. Details can be made out, backgrounds look real, and nothing changes for the cut scenes. The only real standout is that the programmers got the camera angles right. The sounds, however, are where the game really shines. They are all frighteningly realistic, from the footsteps to the explosions, and the voice acting is the best around. Every character has his or her own unique voice, and often you can tell just by listening to them whether they are good guys or bad guys.
That is, when the game begins. The complex plot has a lot of twists, and no one is who they seem to be. The game introduces you to a character and gets you to like him, but then the character gets killed off or turns out to be a bad guy. The designers must have spent years outlining the plot, because it is truly excellent. I can't say much about it, because I'm afraid I might spoil something.
Unfortunately, despite the great premise and plot, I just can't see myself playing this game many more times over the course of my life-and I'm 19, so I've got quite a few years left. Once you beat it, you've pretty much weeded everything out. There is a training mode, an extra ending, and a difficulty selection, but these don't make the game any more challenging. The training mode is too short, the extra ending depends on whether or not you defeat the final boss within the aloted time, and the difficulty selection only makes the game more annoying. And some of events are annoying enough as is. There is a fight against one enemy, Psycho Mantis, that will have you tearing your hair out. The greatest injustice is that this game covers two discs, but isn't even ten hours long! You can beat it in a weekend.
And that's exactly what you should do.

Metal Gear Solid was one of those rare games to completely blow my mind. The opening act unfolds just like a movie and I remember how awesome I thought that was. The story is very good and the game features some of the coolest boss battles in gaming, such as the sniper battle with Sniper Wolf. This is another game I wish I could play again for the first time.

This here is what started it all for me. After playing this game i couldn't wait for the next installment. I've since then beat all the Metal Gear Solid titles. Each one very enjoyable in its own right. You should definitely play this game at least once if your a gamer or your someone looking to get into a fantastic story driven series.
