Chicago Blackhawks
Looking at a list of NHL teams, one can't help but wonder: Where are all the teams in the pacific northwest? It seems like a perfectly natural area for hockey to thrive, after all, being so close to Canada. Well, to know the full history of hockey entails knowing the things that happened before even the Original Six, and there WERE professional hockey teams there for awhile. Back in the 1910's, professional …

Chicago Cubs
The eternal story of professional sports has one particular constant: The winners will always be perpetual winners, no matter how bad they get, and the losers will always be perpetual losers, no matter how good they get. Yes, the good teams are going to have off years, sometimes stringing together a few in a row, but you can always count on them to return to the upper parts of the standings, and bad …

There are very few teams anywhere whose history can be so evenly split down the middle. I can name the Chicago Bulls and their citymate baseball team, the Cubs, but that's just off the top of my head. Anyway, basketball is becoming a bigtime global sport. I get the sense that the NBA will one day be America's response to the English Premier League: The largest, most popular league for a sport which …

John Hancock Observatory
It has the best views in the city, and it's cheaper and has shorter lines than the Sears Tower. It's also more conveniently located for tourists, right on Michigan Avenue while the Sears Tower is located right in the heart of The Loop, Chicago's commercial district.

Harry Caray
I really don't get it. What was so special about this guy? He was instrumental in turning the Cubs, the team he's most closely associated with, into a fluffball team. He sang terrible off-key renditions of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame." That this guy was given his own statue at Wrigley Field before Ernie Banks is unjust and nonsensical - and I'm a White Sox fan!

Chicago Bears Football
Such is the history and importance of the Chicago Bears that I have had to mention them in almost every review I've written of the NFL so far. One of the charter members of the NFL, and the second-oldest professional football team in the league, the Bears stand head and shoulders above almost every other team in the league in terms of history, prestige, and tradition. Chicago is very proud of its …

Chicago Spire
I have to laugh. In concept, this sucker was pretty. REAL pretty. However, it went through at least four different design phases which were all greenlighted then inexplicably stopped. The head architect tried to gain favor for it by claiming it would just fade into the background of Chicago's other great architecture and never be noticed, which is just plain stupid for two reasons: One, it's about …

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza
You'll want to be very, very careful with this stuff, because it will one day kill you. I love the way deep-dish pizza is done - the sauce is the top of the pizza, and the actual topping is cooked into the deep bottom crust. I've had several kinds from a few different pizza places, and they were all superb. But the best was done by Giordano's.

Free Things to Do in Chicago
This is one of the most useful websites I've ever seen. There are a million things to do in Chicago, but the problem is, no one knows about them - even a lot of longtime residents don't have any idea. So along comes Free Things to Do in Chicago, letting us in on things that are not only doable, but doable at the best possible cost - nuthin'!

A lot of sweetness, which is why they don't use ketchup. A vienna beef hot dog in a poppy seed bun with mustard, sweet relish, hot peppers, a dill pickle, celery salt, tomatoes, and onions. The only question is, just how the hell do you eat the damn thing?

Millennium Park
Between the ampitheater, the incredible sculptures and fountains, the gardens, and the skating rink, this is just one of the most incredible public parks you'll ever see. You would never think it was only a few acres just outside the Loop! And its location means it has extremely close proximity to some of Chicago's other great attractions - it's on Michigan Avenue, close to Grant Park and Buckingham …

Navy Pier
It's a nice place to hang out, but there's not a whole lot about it that special. There's a nice stained glass museum which is very unique and a good giant-screen theater, but otherwise this place is many of the worst aspects of corporate America. I'm amazed McDonald's hasn't bought the naming rights to it.

The best newspaper I read in Chicago. It has the best writers - Richard Roeper, Roger Ebert, Rick Telander, Mark Brown, Esther Cepeda, Cathleen Falsani, and Neil Steinberg - even though I disagreed a lot with him - are all excellent. It always appeared to be a bit more grounded in Chicago issues than the Trib, and its writers took more chances. It also had humor relief with QT and Quick Hits. However, …

posted a Quick Tip about Phil Jackson. November 04, 2011
posted in Windy City Secrets
Hey Lakers - Phil Jackson was ours before he was yours! Either way, he was the greatest coach of all time, winning ten titles, revolutionizing basketball offense, and finding subtle ways to get into his players' heads to bring out their best. People try to say Red Auerbach was the greatest, but Auerbach didn't have to deal with today's massive egos and skyrocketing player salaries. He didn't risk …

Chicago Traffic
I actually didn't have too many problems with congestion. It only seems severe on the freeways, which can be avoided entirely if you know your way around the city. My problem is drivers don't look out for cyclists; I've been slammed by several doors and cars. One time it happened right in the middle of Clark Street, in the Loop! Chicago is a bicycle-heavy city, so drivers can't afford to fling their …

Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox can't win even for winning. They're not exactly what you would call a charmed team. The images the White Sox provoke in the minds of baseball fans really aren't fair, because the far-out history of the team holds a certain appeal in itself. I found this out when I adopted the White Sox as my second team when I moved to Chicago.     The Chicago White Sox are …

Ginos East
This restaurant was recommended to me by the concierge at the Sutton Place Hotel. I usually take friends to Lou Malnati's or Giordano's if they want to try out a classic piece of Chicago deep dish pizza. But with a Ginos East coupon in hand, I decided to give it a whirl. I was not impressed with the lines, the free coupon "offering" or the pizza. It took an hour to get the pizza delivered to our table …
