The Best Chinese Restaurant in Chicago

  • Dec 28, 2010
After living in Chicago for nearly five years, I finally made it to Chinatown. Excited to explore, with really no game plan or recommendations on where to go or what to eat, I stumbled upon Won Kow (the huge yellow sign was helpful and hard to ignore!).

Won Kow, is a local, neighborhood restaurant nestled on the main drag of Wentworth Ave. surrounded by stores filled with cultural Chinese knick-knacks. My friend and I hiked up the restaurants two flights of stairs (following the mouth-watering aromas) to find a vast room filled with fellow foodies and gorgeous artwork.

The menu was overwhelming, with over 300 items, making it a long (but fun) ordering process. I started with pot stickers which were enormous and tasty, followed by egg rolls (my favorite), BBQ pork, and Crab Rangoon. With ridiculously reasonable priced entrees I felt like I could order one of everything on the menu and still leave with money in my wallet. For entrees I tried the Moo Shoo Chicken and the Kung Pao Beef. Both were fresh and flavorful and the portions were huge (two people could easily split one entrée).

Stuffed to the brim and happily taking home leftovers, I am certain that Won Kow is one of Chi-town’s best kept secrets and one of my new favorite restaurants in the city. Beyond the expansive food selection, Won Kow also has a fun selection of cocktails! I recommend the Singapore Slinger, its sweet taste and potent alcohol content is serious business!

Looks to me like the American version of Chinese restaurant ;-) Authentic Chinese restaurant will never be caught with serving cocktails :D Anyhow, as long as you love the food...

Yes, it's definitely been Americanized, but they certainly have more dish variety than I've seen at any other Chinese restaurant, so it's still fun to explore the options:)
