Authentic Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Italian cuisine comes in a variety of ways, but in Chicago, the best kind comes out of a circular deep dish pizza pan. My deep dish partiality grew out of years of savoring the taste-bud transforming experience of Chicago deep dish pizza. There are quite a few things to do while visiting the great city of Chicago, but if you miss out on the best pizza on the planet – you might as well stay at home.
First things first, there are many shysters out there who try to open up a restaurant outside of Chicago and pawn off some terrible version of Chicago’s deep dish pizza.  Although there are a number of ways to create this culinary masterpiece, there are a million ways to make it wrong. So, do yourself a favor and try deep dish pizza out at a legitimate Chicago establishment.
Where to Eat: While in Chicago, I enjoyed the best. Here are my restaurant recommendations in no particular order:
Lou Malnati’s Pizza is an old-style Chicago restaurant that makes deep dish so well, you can have it Fedexed to your house wherever you live. I wholeheartedly endorse this option if you live outside of the Chicago metropolitan area and you’re not visiting anytime soon. This version of deep dish has a thinner and flakier crust surrounding a deep dish consistency that is less cheesy but more gourmet than the others.
Giordano’s Pizza is another fine Chicago restaurant that appeals to everyone. There are at least half-a-dozen locations scattered around the city with a deep dish version that has a thicker crust with more sauce on top and loads of thick cheese. This version seems to be quite popular among the majority of people – and it looks like what deep dish is supposed to be.
Chicago’s Pizza is a late night restaurant that will serve and deliver anywhere in the city until 5am. Therefore, most of the city’s denizens have had the distinct pleasure of enjoying this devilish late night meal on more than a few occasions. This version of deep dish is similar to Giordano’s and has the same kind of popular appeal. The only difference is that you can order many different things of the menu for those finicky eaters and their pizza commercials are the best.
What to Order: Anything your heart desires. Because all of the ingredients are baked into a delicious pizza pie, you really can’t go wrong. I’ll order sausage, pepperoni, and mushrooms and let anyone add whatever else they want. The result is pizza nirvana but the price is that it ruins all other styles of pizza for the rest of your life.

This is a great review of Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. I've sampled Deep Dish Pizza on a few occasions. It was a memorable pizza experience. While you can certainly find great thin crust pizza in Chicago, the Deep Dish is a Chcaigo original.

I was so depressed when UNO's Chicago style pizza moved out of my neighborhood but BJ's bar and grill in South San Francisco makes some killer deep dish pizzas. You're making me hungry! LOL

Curse you for making me drool all day. Women are going to think it's because I'm checking them out. :) One of my favorite features about living in Chicago is the pizza. It's the ONLY "famous" food that I can think of that you can't readily get outside of it's home city. My theory is that the cost is more than most people outside of Chicago are used to paying for pizza. There is a place here that is pretty close. I would add Eduardo's to your list of places to try and maybe add to your "where to get" favs! :)

I've never had deep dish pizza, and now I want it so bad! Thanks for the tip about the pizza ordering. I might have to check it out.

You'll want to be very, very careful with this stuff, because it will one day kill you. I love the way deep-dish pizza is done - the sauce is the top of the pizza, and the actual topping is cooked into the deep bottom crust. I've had several kinds from a few different pizza places, and they were all superb. But the best was done by Giordano's.

About this food

Chicago-style pizza is a deep-dish pizza style developed in Chicago. Chicago-style pizza has a buttery crust up to three inches tall at the edge, slightly higher than the large amounts of cheese and chunky tomato sauce, acting as a large bowl. The term also refers to "stuffed" pizza, another Chicago style. While in Chicago most pizzerias serve thin-crust pizza, generally in a style characteristic to the city, the term Chicago-style pizza is used to describe this deep-dish style of pizza.
