The best documentaries are the ones that transport you to a certain place or time, and make you feel like you are a vicarious observer on the scene. 'Endless Summer' does this in spades. Despite some obvious flaws with which one could nitpick (some amateur shots and atmosphere), this film is both a time capsule and a timeless film trek. Shot in the mid-sixties, California surfers, Mike and … more

Best search engine. So far no one can dispute that. Bing is trying hard though. In any case, the investors think it's worth a whopping $540 a share, so what more can I say? However, lately Google has been going into areas which others excel in, much more like a copycat than anything. It doesn't bode well. It feels like Google is having "problems" being large!
Okay, I'm a pretty big sci-fi geek. I watch numerous sci-fi shows and I'm a big fan of most sci-fi films. I enjoy watching science fiction be used as a platform that explores deep personal truths about the human condition. Every good sci-fi movie reveals something deep about ourselves, but amongst the good ones, there are terrible sci-fi movies that never should have seen the light of day. … more
A beautiful and exotic country with lots to see and do. Why it's not a +4 or +5? Well, safety for solo travelers, especially female travelers is a big concern and one that is not to be taken lightly! Otherwise, it's one of the most interesting countries in Africa!
District 9 begins when a very large star ship lands in South Africa during 1982. These are aliens called "the prawns" and are initially welcomed by the human race. Now, twenty-eight years after this, the aliens are stuck and mistreated in a beat up, worthless camp called District 9. The Multi-National United, otherwise known as MNU, cares very little for the alien race, but has … more

For those of you who don't know, Paul the Octopus was an oracle that not only inspired millions around the world this past summer, but put a little hope in the eyes of the soccer teams he would pick to win. In any case like this where an animal has the ability to woo over millions of people, its usually an elephant painting for charity or a dog riding a skateboard, but its rare that we see an … more

I haven't found the right words to do a full review. But I can say that the story is compelling and the special effects are impressive. It is nauseating in the same way as any David Cronenburg film (Scanners, eXistenz, The Fly, Naked Lunch), so don't watch it on a full stomach.

Invictus is more about the heart of President Nelson Mandela rather than the Bokks rugby team. This film paints a beautiful picture of forgiveness, courage and the strength that comes from choosing to walk the high road with dignity. Two of the people I viewed the movie with thought there was a lack of action. I tend to like slower character pieces so that may … more

I've always had a great admiration for Nelson Mandela, but have only known the very basics about his life and political career. Whenever I saw him on TV I was always captivated by the man who had ruled a nation, yet seemed so grounded and modest that I could only respect him. I have to admit that up to the point of reading this book I was totally ignorant to the extremities of apartheid in South … more

Maybe the best alien movie I have ever seen. The way the movie forces us to empathize with those beyond ourselves and face or our short comings make this a must see.

What a great finale! So glad that it didn't come down to penalty kicks. From what I gather Spain had a number of players that had been together for years on their own team and their teamwork appeared to be the difference.
