An Internet Take Over Unlike Any Other: The World Cup 2010

Zidane Headbutt in 2006 World Cup Final

Imagine a 2010 web response to Zidane's infamous head butt. It would make the 2006 news flurry feel like a wind gust.

I'm talking about an all out blizzard. Zizou's knucklehead would rival Bieber fever.

It's time for records to be broken. On the field, off the field and in the Internet. The World Cup 2010's greatest feat may be taking the current race of global social web thought sharing and blaring to an unimaginable speed and scope.

Stateside, I think it's obvious our sporting interests are slightly more spread out than many countries but I disagree with the overwhelming sentiment that Americans are apathetic about soccer.

In fact, I don't think anyone, even people who are apathetic (American or otherwise) about soccer, will be able to avoid talking, reading or writing about it this summer.

It only takes a glance at the trending topics on twitter every Champions League match day (and that includes filtering the TTs to U.S. regional cities) to see that major soccer news, players, teams and incidents snagging the top spots for hours on end. Remember, that's the UEFA Champions League we are talking about. Which takes place on Tuesday's & Wednesday's during most American's lunch breaks.

During the last World Cup (2006) social media was still in its college-student-guinea-pig stage. I remember joining the "World Cup" group on Facebook a month or so prior to my departure to Berlin but there were only a couple thousand members and the activity amongst them was sporadic at best.

With the Social Media virus wedging itself into our DNA, Americans and the world ( I see you, Brazil and your twitter obsession) will be able to yammer on about the cup before, after and during the breathtaking matches, moments and musings.

I predict an all encompassing overhaul of web news (especially Social)  from June 11 - July 11. Unlike any of us have seen before. The closest comparison would be the Olympics, which is like arts&crafts compared to the World Cup.

I imagine that almost every update-reliable friend you have will post at least one update about The World Cup. Mark my words.

Already, search engines and every other thing you can like/share/fan/follow/remix on the web

So, as the tournament draws near and the storm begins to brew, remember that no platform is safe.

You can't run, you can't hide, all you can really do is disconnect. Fat chance of that happening.

You were right about this one Dweez. The internet BROKE today http://mashable.com/2010/06/23/usa-vs-algeria-world-cup/ Hit the highest amount of traffic on the internet ever. And Twiiter hasn't been working since the start of the cup!

Twitter had trending topics of the Atletico Madrid/Fulham UEFA Cup final. It's going to EXPLODE for the World Cup. If I didn't love the World Cup, I'd probably get pissed off. But this time, I'm gonna be doing the off-pissing.

Ditto. Good call on the UEFA Cup popularity. I noticed even when Argentina made their selections for the WC roster, Cambiasso became like the second most trended topic in the U.S. on twitter because he wasn't included. That's wild. I agree, it will only get wilder.

In memory of a friend
My friend Ivan Jimenez will be extremely happy about this World Cup. Afterall, Spain is in the final! My last and also first World Cup attendance was in Germany, ie. The 2006 World Cup. I didn’t really visit Germany for the World Cup, I was hardly a fan. I just happened to be there. I was in Berlin, Hamburg and Luebeck during my summer vacation. The festive mood in Berlin & Hamburg was simply incredible; everywhere you see men (hot blooded ones too)! Lots of foreigners, tourists, merry …

***Dear Internet, please excuse the lack of visual aid and humor me by allowing the archaic written word to fulfill the stimuli necessary for your enjoyment. Apparently, there are still some places in the world where you are an infant.*** For the fourth time this World Cup, my voice is killing me.  Last night, I spent half of the game (after weaseling down from the nosebleeds to the bloody noses - i.e. the seats you where the fights break out in the armpits of the stadium) I belted out in …

I was really excited about successfully picking Italy to win it all last time, and for largely the correct reasons (solid defense plus superb metronome midfielder/set piece taker in Andrea Pirlo). But I'm really torn about this one.      Predicting the World Cup is usually quite difficult, but there are almost always a few rules that work:      1. Repeat champions are extremely rare. Too much pressure, probably.      2. The host nation …

I'm a soccer newbie, but being introduced to The Beautiful Game via the 2010 World Cup is about as good as it gets. I can't believe I've been missing out on this insanity every four years! Now I have something to look forward to when the Olympics are on downtime; better late than never! Between losing sleep to watch the early AM games, the vuvuzela madness & buying my own ball to kick around, World Cup fever has definitely struck me hard. I just wish the teams I rooted for were still in the Cup!

Watching the World Cup with dad, prepping for the Lake Show! More sports in 1 day than I have watched in years. Viva Mexico! Mexico 2 - France 0 <-- Final #WC #FIFA

Feared African killer bees as a child, but had no idea how bad the problem was until I listened to the World Cup. Is it even safe to play?

I think it is good that the World Cup is happening.  I wish it was in Michigan, particularly detroit and michigan stadium though.

Some of the games have been a lot of fun but I'd love to smash those stupid horns making that constant bee noise!

Rep of Ireland were so horribly close and robbed by an Henry handball. I don't know if they would have gone though, guess we'll never know.

Somewhat interesting draw with a few huge games, but a little light on overall drama. Brazil-Portugal and England-USA should be great!

Wiki

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations.

This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. Italy are the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town.
